So if you’re still dreaming of mashed potatoes and stuffing, here’s a list of a just a few of our favorite books and movies to get you back on track.
Food Inc is sort of the gold standard when it comes to food documentaries: it covers so many aspects of the food industry and our relationship to food in such a short time that you can’t help but walk away feeling changed. From factory farming to GMOs to the over-processed packaged foods so ingrained in the standard american diet, Food Inc. breaks down all the problems with the way we eat today. With an oscar nomination, seven other awards and 20 other nominations, this is a must-see for anyone concerned with what they eat and where it comes from.
Fat, Sick And Nearly Dead
This documentary follows the journey of Joe Cross, an “average Joe” struggling with obesity and an autoimmune skin disorder and, like many americans, taking prescription medications daily. Instead of giving up, Joe decides to take matters into his own hands by juicing for 60 days straight. During this cleanse, he also travels the country to show others what juicing has done for him and to inspire others to do the same- by then end he’s lost 100 pounds, rid himself of his symptoms and inspired several others to take charge of their health. Although they seem miraculous and his journey is inspiring, we juice junkies already knew that there’s no better medicine than juice.
Forks Over Knives
If you’re ready to fully embrace the plant powered lifestyle, there are few movies as inspiring as Forks Over Knives. Two doctors are followed by filmmakers in this documentary that explores the myriad of health concerns facing Americans today and comes to a surprisingly simple solution: eat more veggies. It advocates for a rejection the standard animal and processed food diet, in favor of a whole food, plant based diet. Doctors Campbell and Esselstyn argue that this could be the the prevention and the cure for ailments from “heart disease, type 2 diabetes and even several forms of cancer” (https://www.forksoverknives.com/synopsis/.)
If books are more your speed, we’ve got a couple we keep handy:
