Spotlight on Quinoa!
We couldn’t do a series on our favorite superfoods without one hugely popular yet tiny super cereal- Quinoa! Don’t be fooled by its size, this little seed packs a whole lot of nutrition, making it a great replacement for all kinds of rices and pastas. We use it here as part of our breakfast bowls, a great replacement for sugary cereals and oatmeal, and in our quinoa salad bowl as a great source of protein to fill you up for lunch. We’ll be sampling some of these menu items on our FREE JUICE DAY on Valentine’s day so you can try it for yourself, but until then we’ll give you just a few reasons why we’ve already fallen in love with this super-seed.
- Provides complete proteins
Unlike some other plant protein sources, quinoa is what’s considered a complete protein, meaning it contains the essential amino acids necessary to act as a high quality protein source all on its own. And, recent studies have shown it is just as digestible as other protein sources and doesn’t degrade in the process of digestion. This makes it a great protein source especially for those who don’t eat meat.
- A great grain!
Not only a protein rich food, quinoa is also a whole grain. And since consuming 2-3 servings of whole grains per day is associated with reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, colon cancer, and obesity, there’s no reason not to eat up for breakfast and lunch!
- Stay satisfied
A study by the University of Milan showed that quinoa had a higher satiating index than white rice and white bread both, meaning it will keep you fuller for longer with higher quality nutrition. That way you can reduce your need to snack between meals, and stay more focused on the task at hand.
