"Antioxidant" has become somewhat of a buzzword in the health food world lately. We hear it all the time, how everything from chocolate and wine to kale and spinach is "rich in antioxidants." And while that gives us another great excuse to indulge in all those foods, we juice junkies started to think- what exactly is an antioxidant, and why should we care?
Free radicals are unstable, highly reactive molecules within the body that move about independently and can give their unpaired electron away or take one from another molecule, a process called oxidation. These free radicals can attack different macromolecules in the body, leading to cell damage and oxidative stress. These can come from natural processes in the body, or from environmental pollutants, smoking, and unhealthy foods.
Antioxidants are stable molecules that seek out free radicals in the body and neutralize them. This stabilizes the free radical and stops it from doing any more damage. Some of these dare produced in the body and many come from the foods we eat.
As tiny as they are, free radicals have a huge impact on your health. Having too many free radicals without antioxidants to inhibit them has been increasingly linked to all kinds of health issues. PubMed Central lists free radical damage as a factor in "cardiovascular diseases, neurological diseases, malignancies, renal diseases, diabetes, inflammatory problems, skin diseases, aging, respiratory diseases, liver diseases and different types of viral infections." *
Keeping in balance
A healthy body has a balance of free radicals and antioxidants to keep this oxidative stress as low as possible. The best way to ensure your body is in balance is the healthy, natural way- with fruits and veggies!
